Amitabh Ashesh unveils new conceptual foundations for painting in Bengaluru

‘Is Tarah Bhi’, a painting exhibition showcasing Amitabh Ashesh’s original work on ‘Yufism,’ will be on display at the Bangalore International Centre between 7-11 September.

An Alumnus of the IIT and Stanford University’s art department, Amitabh trained under contemporary stalwarts, including Frank Lobdell of the Bay Area Figurative Movement.

The Yufist compositional platform produces a new class of imagery where scenic, figurative and invisible elements share attributes. Windows become blocks of light, rain drops form a trail of ornamental beads and rippling sea waves are worn as a skirt.

In her curatorial note, Carmelita Brunetti writes, "Amitabh Ashesh, an Indian painter, stands out in contemporary art by introducing a sophisticated visual and ideational language. His exploration of forms reflects a profound contemplation of fundamental principles, skillfully navigating between phytomorphic and mechanomorphic elements. This duality between nature and technology finds harmonious synthesis in his works, imbued with a quality that can be described as 'yufism'."

Amitabh explains, "Yufism pilots distinctive compositional principles and constructs into painting. They provide an underpinning for aesthetics and subject themes to ride."

Regarding his thematic compositions, he elaborates, ‘In accompanying my wife, I have often found subjects. My own love for swimming, tennis, the garden and friendships across countries are another source.

Each painting is complemented with a titular poem, nucleating its meanings and letting viewers engage parallely via literary associations. Collective recollection of similar scenery in quotidian Indian life abounds. Bangalore’s famed Brigade Road, home cooking and street dogs fed by kind strangers are given a fresh perspective.

‘Funnily, the wife of a famous British painter recently wondered why I didn't paint Indian scenes. She interpreted a saree clad woman as Western because of their edgy, out the box form,’ recalls Amitabh.

“I never thought this was possible. This is totally different, unique and inspiring…It’s a new approach that has to be explored, it is truly intriguing,’ says Vanidas Mangathil, a Bangalore-based artist.

'Kala for Vidya’, the much-awaited annual event, by the Rotary club of Bangalore is back this weekend (March 9-10th) to coincide with Women’s Day celebrations. An initiative by the Rotary club of Bangalore, it raises funds for the education of underprivileged children. It is a part of their flagship project - the Rotary Bangalore Vidhyalaya (RBV), which was set up in the year 1960, and currently has a student strength of about 540 children (pre-nursery to 10th grade), and where all of these children come from families that need financial support.

From the year 2005, Rotary club of Bangalore has been organizing an art exhibition cum sale called “Kala for Vidya” to raise funds in order to provide education, uniforms, food and books to the children in this school. It is commendable that the artist community has been supporting this initiative right from the beginning as well as has been an integral part of the social cause, contributing immensely to its continued success.

The curated art collection keeps accessibility in mind and provides a diverse range at various price points to allow both new collectors and seasoned investors to either initiate or consolidate their art collection. Another significant element is that several young and emerging artists who made their debut at these exhibitions in previous years have gone on to make a mark in the art world, and they have continued to support the Kala for Vidya cause.

The extensive art collection on display thus invokes a greater appreciation for the sheer diversity in artistic expression, where newer trends, voices and vocabularies are expressed. A special feature of this edition of Kala for Vidya is several contemporary expressions in a variety of materials are presented alongside traditional and classical themes and styles of painting. There are several artists from Bangalore and from across the country who are part of K4V for the first time, and have presented their recent drawings, paintings, mixed media and graphic works, and sculptures at the exhibition.

Rtn. Nalini Nanjundayya, President, Rotary Club of Bangalore elaborates, “This year, we embrace the theme "Oneness of Spirit - Oneness of Thought - Oneness of Action towards the Oneness of ALL." Excitingly, we are set to auction and sell artworks at affordable rates, generously provided by established and emerging artists. The proceeds will contribute to the noble cause of providing education to those in need. Each artist has created a special piece of art for this. Something never seen before. Education is a personal passion of mine, driven by its transformative power and its ability to change lives.”

This edition focuses largely on figuration and representation of human and animal figures, elements from nature, and depiction of life from rural and urban situations. Myths, folklore and divinity are some of the themes that have been explored by several artists in overt and in metaphorical ways. However, some of the artists have adopted a minimalistic approach using material to create texture and form. 

Well-known artists such as Ankon Mitra, Mukesh Sharma, Sachin Tekade, Shivani Aggarwal, Nandesha Shantiprakash, Raghu Kondur, Gyanesh Mishra among others are participating for the first time.

Ankon is known for his large-scale sculptural installations but has specially created an exquisite hand folded set of butterflies in metal, while Mukesh presents contemporary paintings with influences from RajasthanI miniature paintings, frescos, and block printing of Sanganer. Sachin transforms the textural qualities of paper in a sculptural form, Gopinath S. presents an ethereal and delicate porcelain sculpture, Manisha Gopinath explores the beauty of birds, trees and marine forms in ceramic and offers a piece that reflects this. Suresh K. is fascinated with how building layers with paper can alter the effects of light and shadows and combines with watercolour to narrate a story.

G. Subramanian, Jasu Rawal, Gurudas Shenoy, Chandranath Acharya, M.G.Doddamani, Shan Re, Basuki Dasgupta, Venugopal V.G., Bhavani GS, Pradeep Kumar DM have been associated with K4V for a long time and have created new works for the exhibition, while senior artists SG Vasudev, 
CS Krishana Setty, AM Prakash, Ravikumar Kashi and others are also part of the exhibition

The highly anticipated India Art Festival (IAF) returns to Bengaluru for its third edition, from December 14 to 17 at the expansive Palace Ground, Kings Court. This year's edition promises an unparalleled showcase of artistic brilliance, with an unprecedented number of participants, making it the largest and most diverse gathering of artists and galleries to date.

Reminiscences by Bharathi S

Recollections: Traveling Through Time

Bangalore based artist Bharathi S. revisits her childhood through paintings that wistfully capture joie de vivre, of carefree days, gone by. The paintings in the new series, ‘Reminiscences’ evoke flashes of vivid memory, of youthful days and simpler times. The kaleidoscopic images depict a fervent memoire tinged with nostalgia and innocence, and of those past moments that were uncluttered and unencumbered from the urgency and stresses of urban life. The works are suggestive of the rich fragrance of imagination and the joy of untroubled days, where time was slower, and perhaps it even stood still, more so, in small towns and villages, where Bharathi grew up.

Her works are akin to photographic film negatives, albeit in color, where masses and forms coalesce and blur, in effortless motion. The colors, as patches of pigments, take shape from a distance, and dissolve once again on approaching closer. Most of the larger paintings have figures of children either playing or watching adults complete household chores – there is an inherent exuberance and dynamism with a heightened sense of motion that is evident. A safe, secluded world is quietly tangible.

An avid traveler, she has been fascinated by clouds – their patterns and how they shift form, disperse, and re-form at times to acquire newer shapes and outlines. Their temporal nature and their transitions, have impacted her perception, in her observations of life and events and their fleeting characteristics. This in turn has inspired the small format paintings, which rely on abstraction as a tool to convey the thematic subjects as they shift forms amidst the colors, and which reemphasize the subtleties of movement and transitions.

Cut Pieces by KP Reji at The Guild

The Guild presents “Cut Pieces”, a much awaited solo exhibition of recent works by Baroda based artist K. P. Reji at The Guild, Alibaug.

The show is the first presentation in the silver jubilee year of the gallery. Reji’s works are known for their witty take on the state machinery and its multiple modes of ordering of lives of people. In this recent body of works he takes a new direction in exploring this. The meticulously constructed canvases offer a newer language, and furthermore, newer narratives in his repertoire. “K.P. Reji’s oeuvre, marked by its frontal narrative overtures and enigmatic subterranean, political sites, propels us to think about the need to define beauty in a new ontological setting. This drive is evident in his move, on the one hand, towards an allegorical mode of narratology, and a counter-move to suspend the narratorial through the ‘decoratively-real’ exteriors and interiors, on the other. In an intriguing manner, many of his works present themselves to us as allegories on practices, and works of art; as an artistic rumination on representational dilemmas of narrative idioms.

These representational dilemmas stem from an artistic contemplation and reasoning regarding the nature of the political in the discursive universe of what can be broadly called aesthetical practices. Reji’s artistic propositions often remind us, in a Freudian analytical way, that the experience of beauty is bound up with, or is a form of mourning; it is a life-affirming act even though what one is dealing with is the most abominable. His works can be read perhaps as a pharmakon, which ex-poses the melancholies of our time; or better put, in-stances inertias that cloud our thinking and action. In a way, it presences the element of the violence of the sublime—at times, through the fracturing and fragmenting (and tearing) of form, materiality, proportion, and even composition, for the sake of the aesthetic encounter. The constant reinvention of unforeseen potentials of the affective fields of percepts and language Enables this body of work by Reji to enact the redistribution of the sensible, and thereby, open up newer possibilities of the political and the aesthetical. 

In the overall schema of this exhibition, both the phenomenology and politics of perception are evoked through the spectral presence of multiple acts of blinding. Interplay of Visual Contrasts

The ongoing exhibition of paintings by Vaman Pai and ceramics by Gomathi Suresh at Gallery Manora, explore abstract imagery through two diverse visual mediums. The show is curated by Giridhar Khasnis, who writes, “Involved in different mediums, they create works that are not fixed on any particular notion or theme but imagery that is free and open to interpretation. Silent yet evocative, their abstract constructs and formations are coloured with introspective tones and designs.”

Vaman is a Bangalore-based painter and sculptor, who is essentially self-taught. G S Shenoy, the late senior artist known for his abstracted landscapes had a large influence on his artistic vocabulary. Vaman has been painting landscapes for several years and in this series, his works display a natural fluidity and eloquence. There is an evident spontaneity in the rendering and an inclination to capture subtle atmospheric nuances. Inspired by nature, and the colour and vastness of the sky, he has employed a predominantly blue and white palette, experimenting adroitly with gentle patterns and textures.

Ceramic by Gomathi Suresh
Gomathi Suresh is a Sydney-based ceramist and art promoter, who has exhibited her works in several group shows and at the Ceramic Art School, Tafe Sydney where she completed her 2-year diploma in ceramic art. She is currently pursuing a 2-year advanced diploma in ceramic art.

In this series, which has been produced in response to Vaman’s paintings, her concern for environment, climate change and ecological sustainability form the underlying subtext. She explains, “My body of work for this exhibition is an immediate and gestural response to the painterly abstraction of Vaman Pai's works whilst maintaining the unique nature of my own making, use of surface treatment and three dimensionalities.” Her works often reference land forms and memories of landscapes from her travels around the world.

Adopting multiple techniques, ranging from the traditional to the more experimental, Gomathi has played with glazes and firing processes to achieve textures, patterns and compelling visual effects that emphasize colours and surface expanses. She says, “l have fired my works several times to achieve painterly, layered atmospheric depths, closely akin to watercolor effects on textured paper; deliberately exposing the marks of my making, just as a painter would with his brush strokes, creating abstract surfaces evoking perhaps the warmth of a sunrise, the mystery of a dark starry night, the glow of sunsets and or an icy bare landscape.”

The commonalities and contrasts explored in the exhibition form an interesting interplay of visual coherence through pluralities of materials and mediums, and artistic viewpoints.

Waves of Imagination by Humera Ali


Bangalore based artist Humera Ali presents her recent body of works in her second solo show at MKF Museum of Art. Employing abstraction as a tool to convey her concerns for nature and its conservation, Humera depicts landscapes as large expanses of textured colour fields. She says, “Unleashing years of latent creativity, the show is oriented from my love for nature that transforms my rendition in a natural leaning towards abstraction.”

She attempts to capture the gentle gradients of the terrain, the glimmer of sunlight on land and water and the various movements observed in nature. “My brush strokes using acrylic medium are seen as ‘bold’ and pigments used as ‘strong’ while being inspired by pointillism and knife art as a medium and technique. Observing the veins of a leaf, the textures created in water on a pebble are details seen in my creations.”

The lyrical movements, patterns and textures inherent in nature are translated on the canvas. “My series on water is to recreate the beauty of the sea in tranquillity or rippling waves on the sand as I observe and create forms through a rhythmic pattern. Every canvas translates into a meditative experience with the intention to take the viewer in a narrative that transcends into another realm of their imagination.” The tender approach to painting reflects in the serenity of the works and the light and shadow effects displayed through tonal variations.

The series of works aims to also emphasize on the need for immediate action in cognizance of rapid urbanization, climate change and global warming. “I use the canvas to express my intense feelings with a strong message to conserve nature as global warming has given rise to water levels with repercussions of land that is fast receding.”

She emphasizes, “this show is a plea to all who respect the vagaries and strength in nature to continue the movement of protecting our planet.”

Humera is a self taught artist driven by passion, she was later mentored by the Bangalore based senior artist JMS Mani. Her works are part of collections in South Carolina, Sydney and Canada. She also does community service by giving art therapy to children with chronic illnesses providing them with a healing touch.
