ARTALKS @ the Reading room
KHOJ In Context: public.art ecology residency, Phase II

18 March 2011, 4:00pm
FICA Reading Room, D42, Defence Colony, New Delhi 110020

A discussion on the intersection of Art, Ecology and Science by Biologist & Physicist Dr. Mukund Thattai and Philosopher & Physicist Dr. Sundar Sarukkai with the resident artists at KHOJ, Heather Ackroyd & Dan Harvey, Navin Thomas, Brandon Ballengee and Pratik Sagar, moderated by the critic in residence, Jyoti Dhar.

The convergence of the worlds of art and science is creating a new niche of cultural experimentation. In both popular and scientific culture, the ascendency of biology and its success in spreading knowledge and visual information about other species has stimulated attention. More recently, global warming and international ecological crises have urgently focused our attention on our relationship with other species.

Reflecting these larger social interests artists have begun to focus on such subjects. By transcending disciplinary boundaries this intersection hopes to bridge the gap and break down the language barrier between art and science addressed through a combination of artistic intervention, critical theorizing, and reflective practices, opening up a world of possibilities and creative ideas emerging from current developments in technology and scientific research .

The In Context:public.art.ecology
residency in its second phase will investigate and explore sites of science pursued through its diverse projects ranging from creating living ecosystems for insects, an organic grass photosynthesis photograph, an interactive bird habitat, an insect attracting eco- habitat; all within the broader framework of ecology and science rooted in todays’s cultural and philosophical context.

In Context:public.art.ecology
is supported by the Royal Norwegian Embassy in India.
